Hidden garden just outside Udine. Where to eat the best grilled chicken, but also great starters such as the carpaccio, or grilled or raw porcini. What a magical place! I was enchanted from the moment we walked in the door and saw their collection of old copper pots and spoons and scissors, and then were hit with the smell of meat on the grill in the middle of the room. Everything about Alla Vedova is marvelous! Our server was incredibly helpful and explained all the regional specialties, which we promptly ordered. Across 18 days traveling through Italy, I don’t think I ate anything as profound as the pasticcio (a lasagna-like dish made of layers of crepe) with asparagus, sclopit (an herb), and nettles. I almost didn’t exist while I ate it. The cjarsons, another specialty of Friuli, are downright medieval and totally wonderful! Little pyramids of potato dough encase a small amount of filling, half dusted in cinnamon, half in a generous grating of ricotta salata (I think!), all of it in a pool of delicious butter. We had the chicken, which was perfect, and then, for dessert, the best tiramisu of my life! It wasn’t too sweet, it wasn’t too soggy, the texture was so elegant, and the heavy dusting of unsweetened cocoa gave it an interesting play between sweet and bitter that I loved. This place is the greatest! Old world atmosphere meets the best of local and regional with plenty of quirk! Worth going to Udine just to eat here.

This traditional Udinese osteria feels like stepping into another era. The atmosphere is enchanting, with exceptional food, wine, and a well-curated menu. The service was great, and the bill perfectly matched the quality of the experience. A true gem in Udine!

Always a treat! I hate to share this place, but it’s so good and authentic that it deserves to be mentioned! The grilled chicken is a specialty, but everything from the open fireplace is wonderful and so are the desserts and everything else. We always visit for lunch when we are in or around Udine.
